Prof Ying CHAN

Prof Ying Chan is a senior reporter, editor, journalism and media professor, and the former Director of the Journalism and Media Studies Centre at the University of Hong Kong, where she graduated in Social Sciences.

She practised journalism in New York for 20 years. In 1995, she received the Nieman Fellowship to study at the Harvard University. In 1997, she won the CPJ International Press Freedom Awards. In 1998, she became Professor of Journalism at the University of Hong Kong, where she founded Journalism and Media Studies Centre, Master of Journalism programme, and the university’s first journalism curriculum. She was a visiting professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and a scholar at the Media Research Center of the Freedom Forum in New York City. After retirement, she devotes herself to writing, consulting, digital journalism and the development of emerging journalists.
